This is why I love the Internet …

Over the weekend I have been consuming everything I could find from Perry Belcher, and just about the time when I figured I needed a break, I see a video on Perry’s blog. The video is from a guy named Gary Vaynerchuck, and if you don’t know who he is, take this as a warning. You will be glued to your computer for the next several hours.

Take a look at my favorite Gary Vee videos …

I just got done watching a few Perry Belcher videos about “Winning At Social Media“, and I got one of those ‘AHA’ type moments after one of his tips.

Before I get to the tip I must tell you … Perry’s information is addictive, he’s got a style that makes it fun and exciting to learn. As an example … Perry references social media as a huge party, and to treat it as such.

I remember signing up for Twitter back when it was only a couple of months old, but it wasn’t until last year that I created a username that reflects ‘ME’ ( http://www.twitter.com/ScottProck ). I always looked at Twitter and other forms of social media as a way of networking via web 2.0.

It wasn’t until listening to Perry that I really see it now as a big online party, and it has brought the fun back into social media for me.

Now for the tip …

Perry mentioned (paraphrasing here) if you follow someone important to you and want to know who is important to them, just take a look at the first 10 people they started following.

Absolutely ‘BRILLIANT’

So I started looking back at the people I chose as influential in my Twitter group, and quickly realized it could take forever to get back to the first ten people of Tweeters like Robert Scoble - for example – with over 20k people he’s following on Twitter.

I started thinking this isn’t exactly the best tip since I won’t get back to Scoble’s first ten anytime this year. Lucky for me 2009 is just 4 days away ;-)

Then I saw the magic numbers up in the URL … when I clicked on <”following”  and then the <”next” page I noticed this at the end of the URL … /friends?page=2

Problem solved …

Just divide the number of people being followed by 20 (number of friends listed per page). In the case of Robert Scoble (at the time of this post) he’s following 20,815 people, divide that by 20 and you get 1040.75.

Now I know the magic page number of that first page – 1041 – so I just have to replace the /friends?page=2 with /friends?page=1041 and BINGO … I have the 20 people Robert Scoble chose to follow first.

THANK YOU Perry Belcher for what I’m calling the best Twitter tip EVER!

… Enjoy
